Stories tell us who we are, where we come from, and shape where we decide to go. Personal narrative, community history, and family or cultural tradition all have a powerful impact on our lives. My interest in stories led me from my grandmother to other people's grandmothers when I started documenting stories in 1981. Since my return to Alaska in 1986, my interest in stories quickly led me into language preservation and cultural revitalization projects—transforming an interest into a career.
